Eye surgeon sued after cataract procedure

4/9/2007 7:00 PM

A Jefferson County resident is suing a Harris County doctor alleging cataract surgery left him with almost no sight in one eye.

Charles Stroud filed his medical malpractice lawsuit against Dr. Joseph Goetz, the physician who performed the surgery, in the Jefferson County District Court on April 5.

According to Stroud's petition, on Feb. 3, 2005, he went for an examination with Dr. Raj K. Singla at the Singla Eye Institute in Port Arthur and was informed that he required cataract surgery. The defendant performed the surgery at Singla's clinic and Stroud "was left virtually sightless in that eye."

"Plaintiff alleges that defendant herein was grossly negligent or committed acts which rose to the level of malice," the petition states.

Stroud is suing for past and future physical pain and mental anguish.

He is represented by attorney Bob Monk of McPherson, Monk, Hughes, Bradley, Wimberley & Steele in Port Arthur.

Case assignment is pending.

Case No. D179-076
