A color guard represented the armed forces at the Sept. 11 memorial prayer service in Beaumont.

"Taps" was played at the central fire station in downtown Beaumont in honor of the first responders who lost their lives on Sept. 11.

As the bells tolled from historic St. Anthony Cathedral Basilica on Sept. 11, 2007, a group of religious leaders from varying faiths came together in peace.

On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, an evening of unity was held in downtown Beaumont. Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists and Hindus bowed their heads and recited a prayer for peace. Then joined by dozens of first responders, military personnel and citizens, the group made a quiet procession from the Basilica to Fire Station No. 1, Beaumont Police Headquarters and the Port of Beaumont.

At each stop, prayers were recited by representatives of the various religions.

"Walking together is symbolic," said Bishop Curtis Guillory of the Catholic Diocese of Beaumont, which hosted the event. "When you ask someone to walk with you, it is a sign of solidarity and support. That is the message we want to portray here tonight."
