Woman sues hospital after hit by falling TV in emergency room

A Jefferson County woman has filed suit against Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital, alleging her left shoulder, left side and left knee were injured after a 19-inch television fell on her while she was waiting in the emergency room.

Vanessa Lonnett was waiting to be seen by an emergency room doctor on Nov. 10, 2006, when the TV, which was mounted on the wall, fell on her, according to a complaint filed Nov. 10 in Jefferson County District Court.

In addition to her injuries, Lonnett suffered physical disfigurement, physical pain and mental anguish and incurred medical expenses, the suit states.

Lonnett claims the hospital was negligent because it failed to inspect the wall mount to discover a dangerous condition, failed to correct the unsafe condition, failed to repair the wall mount and failed to warn Lonnett of the wall mount's unsafe condition.

Lonnett is seeking unspecified damages in excess of the jurisdictional limits of district court, plus interest at the legal rate, prejudgment interest, costs and other relief the court determines appropriate.

Charlton P. Hornsby of Beaumont will be representing her.

The case has been assigned to Judge Milton Shuffield of the 136th District Court.

Case No. D182-691
