Beaumont woman claiming bed bug infestation sues Galveston hotel

GALVESTON – A Beaumont woman has filed suit against a Galveston hotel, claiming she was attacked by an infestation of bed bugs.

Stephanie Griffin's personal injury lawsuit against Padmanabh Inc., operator of a Galveston La Quinta Inn, was filed Sept. 24 in Galveston County District Court. The grandmother of three claims she was not able to enjoy her trip to the island because of the alleged incident.

The family was in Galveston for what was supposed to be "a fun-filled three-day beach vacation," according to the original petition. They checked in at the defendant's property on July 14.

It was after the plaintiff secured a room when she encountered the pests, the suit says.

Griffin adds she suffered severe pain, itching and extreme discomfort as a result of bumps and welts to her entire body.

She consequently sought immediate medical treatment at the University of Texas Medical Branch where physicians diagnosed her with insect bites.

The plaintiff was given medication to combat her skin irritation and instructed not to go outdoors.

"In accordance with doctors' orders, Ms. Griffin was forced to remain out of the sun while using the medicated lotion and was prevented from enjoying even a single day at the beach with her grandchildren, who had been anxiously anticipating the time at the beach," the suit says.

"Upon her return to Beaumont, Ms. Griffin was forced to seek follow-up treatment at Southeast Texas Medical Associates due to the continued persistent skin irritation and pain."

Griffin, who hired Galveston Craig Eiland to represent her, seeks damages for medical attention and lost wages as well as a jury trial.

Galveston County 122nd District Court Judge John Ellisor is presiding over the case.
