Woman accuses manufacturer of racial, gender discrimination

MARSHALL-A Jefferson woman has filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against her former employer after she was terminated.

Claiming violations of her civil rights, Chelsea Allen filed suit against Woodlawn Manufacturing Ltd. on Aug. 11 in Harrison County District Court. The defendant removed the case to the Eastern District of Texas, Marshall Division on Sept. 3.

The plaintiff accuses her former employer of intentionally discriminating against her because of her race and gender in violation of Title VII and equivalent state statutes.

The defendant is also accused of sexual harassment of Allen and creating a hostile work environment by singling her out, treating her disparately and terminating her employment after she complained of the employment practices.

Allen states she was discharged and discriminated against with respect to compensation, terms of employment, conditions and privileges of employment in retaliation for her opposition to the alleged unlawful employment practices.

Since her termination, Allen states she has been unable to find employment at a comparable rate of pay.

Allen is seeking damages for lost pay and benefits, diminished earning capacity, medical expenses, loss of pension or retirement benefits, mental anguish, emotional distress, punitive damages, back pay, attorney fees, costs and a permanent injunction preventing the defendant from continued discriminatory practices.

She is represented by Bruce A. Craig of The Carlile Law Firm in Marshall. Jury trial is requested.

U.S. District Judge T. John Ward is assigned to the case.
