Friendly horseback ride results in injury, lawsuit

GALVESTON - Melinda Hanks claims that she sustained injuries after she was thrown from a horse at a friend's residence in Santa Fe, Texas, recent court documents say.

Hanks' lawsuit against Joseph and Delores Hall and Stephen Williams states that on Dec. 4, 2008, the defendants invited Hanks over to their home to ride horses.

The suit was filed Dec. 3 in Galveston County District Court.

"For reasons not clear to the plaintiff, the horse became uncontrollable and threw the plaintiff, injuring her," the original petition states.

It additionally insists that the defendants knew the horse was dangerous and should not have allowed Hanks to ride it.

"The defendants failed in that duty and as a result the plaintiff has been injured," the suit says.

"The failure of duty amounts to negligence."

Consequently, Hanks seeks unspecified monetary damages.

She is represented by attorney Christopher Bertini of Galveston.

The case has been assigned to Galveston County 405th District Court Wayne Mallia.
