Buzbee files 10 suits alleging formaldehyde in FEMA trailers

Buzbee

The Buzbee Law Firm recently filed 10 suits on behalf of dozens individuals claiming they were exposed to elevated formaldehyde levels while living in trailers issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The suits were filed Dec. 29 in Jefferson County District Court and only name the respective builder of the trailer as the defendant.

All of the suits allege the defendants expedited the production of the housing units, using "substandard materials which resulted in the housing unit(s) containing higher than normal levels of formaldehyde."

The suits further allege the builders did not conform to government-imposed specifications when manufacturing the trailers.

"Plaintiffs spent significant time in their FEMA-provided housing unit," the suit states. "(Defendants) knew or should have known of the health hazards inherent in the products (they) constructed."

The Buzbee Law Firm contends its clients spent months in the defective trailers, causing them to incur medical expenses, mental anguish and lost wages.

The suits accuse the builders of negligently failing to test the trailers and disclose to FEMA the dangers of living in them.

The plaintiffs are represented by Houston attorney Anthony Buzbee.
