Distracted driver caused collision, suit alleges

Area resident Rogieberto Martinez has filed suit against Beaumont local William Hammonds, alleging Hammonds was distracted when he caused an automobile collision two years ago.

The suit was filed Feb. 13 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, on Feb. 14, 2010, Hammonds was traveling north on US 69 in the inside lane. Martinez was traveling in the outside lane when Hammonds allegedly "had a distraction in his vehicle and failed to drive in a single lane and stuck (sic) the plaintiff's vehicle."

The suit does not state what allegedly distracted Hammonds.

The suit also accuses Hammonds of negligently failing to keep a proper lookout.

The plaintiff is suing for his alleged past and future medical expenses, mental anguish, pain and lost wages, plus all court costs.

Port Arthur attorney Allen Parker represents him.

Judge Gary Sanderson, 6oth District Court, is assigned to the case.
