In a lawsuit filed in the District Court of Harris County, Texas on April 11, 2024 (Case ID: 2024-2331), plaintiff Karama Bourghol, individually and as representative of the Estate of Hisham Bourghol, is suing defendants Dr. Murtaza Shakir and Memorial Hermann Health System d/b/a Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital. The case revolves around alleged medical malpractice leading to the death of Mr. Hisham Bourghol.

The lawsuit details that Dr. Murtaza Shakir, represented by attorney Frank Doyle, performed surgery on Mr. Bourghol at Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital on June 24, 2022. Mr. Bourghol had a mechanical heart valve that could potentially form dangerous blood clots and was taking warfarin, a blood-thinning medication. Despite this known risk and lack of instruction from Dr. Shakir regarding discontinuation of warfarin before surgery, the operation proceeded.

The plaintiff alleges that due to this negligence, Mr. Bourghol suffered severe complications leading to his death. The exact amount for damages is not specified but exceeds the court's minimum jurisdictional requirements.

Karama Bourghol seeks judgment against the defendants for their alleged negligence leading to her husband's death. She intends to conduct discovery under Level 3 and requests a Discovery Control Plan be entered by the court pursuant to Rule 190.4.
